Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some of the common questions we are asked when approached by a potential client. If you have a specific question that is not below, please feel free to contact us.
Why do I need a domain name AND hosting?
Having a domain name all by itself (like “anything.com” or mycompany.net) is like having a street address but no house is located at that street address. Hosting is the “place” that your website “lives”, much like a house is the place where your family lives. The domain name is part of the URL (web address) that “points” people to the server that houses your website, much like your street address “points” people to the location where your home is. Without hosting, your web address either points nowhere and someone entering it into their browser’s address bar gets a warning like “Hmm. We’re having trouble finding that site.” OR they will receive a notice something like “This Web page is parked FREE courtesy of Studio902 Web Solutions” (or whoever they purchased their domain name from).
What is a TLD?
A top-level domain (TLD) is one of the domains at the highest level in the hierarchical Domain Name System of the Internet. The top-level domain names are installed in the root zone of the namespace. For all domains in lower levels, it is the last part of the domain name, that is, the last label of a fully qualified domain name. For example, in the domain name www.example.com, the top-level domain is com. Responsibility for management of most top-level domains is delegated to specific organizations by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which operates the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), and is in charge of maintaining the DNS root zone. Do I need my own content before you begin building the website?
The short answer is “yes”. Most web design companies like their clients to have a general idea regarding what they want their site to be about before they even decide to take on the job, and appreciate clients that know EXACTLY what story they want to tell within the pages their designer is about to create. Some require that all the content be pre-determined and agreed upon during the first couple of meetings following engagement so that they can go about the business of building out the site as fast as possible.
But if you don’t know exactly what you want to say, don’t fear! You have an advantage that nobody else has, that gives you the power to be able to create great content for your website because nobody else knows YOUR business like the owner – YOU! What would YOU say to someone (like a stranger you just met in an elevator) if YOU were describing YOUR business to them? That’s your “elevator speech” and it’s a great starting point for your website’s content. Everything you need to say about your company builds from there. If you can do that, you can write your own content. There is still hope for the tongue-tied or people with writer’s block when it comes to describing your business. There are many talented and gifted Copy Writers who can be hired to write the content for your website, but – depending on who you hire – it could get expensive. So it’s best to know what you want to say and how you want to say either before (or shortly after) engaging someone to build your website.
Someone told me I need to purchase my domain name in ".com", ".net", ".org", ".biz", ".info" and as many others as I can afford. Why?
The main reason domain name sales companies (and many web designers as well) suggest that you do this is because of branding. It’s like this: You have spent your time, blood sweat and tears, building your business in the physical world, and now you’re taking it online. You have a lot of competition in the “real world” and they all want a piece of your pie, otherwise known as market share. Let’s say your company is called “Bills Bikes” and so you register the domain “billsbikes.com”. You sell high-end bicycles like Cannondale, Specialized, Trek, Haro and Masi in your shop and promote your shop on the web. Suppose your major competitor Dirk Bag, who owns a bike shop across town selling many of the same brands you do, finds out that “billsbikes” is available in “.net”, “.co”, “.biz”, “.us” and “.org” and he registers ALL those domains you left behind. Then he points them to his website “dirksbikeshop.com”. Then suppose he engages in a marketing campaign making sure that “billsbikes.net” and all the other top level domains HE owns receive a LOT more publicity than you can manage to muster. Where do your customers go to when they search for “Bills Bikes” in the Google (or Bing, or Yahoo) Search Bar? They get redirected to dirksbikeshop.com because “billsbikes.com” is on the second or third page of the search results and nobody ever lands on it. What would that do for your business?
If you spent thousands of dollars building your business and brand, why let someone else kidnap your customers? It’s all about BRANDING!
How much does a website cost?
Well, that question is a lot like asking “How much does a house cost?” or “How much does a car cost?” You can get a decent house in some cities for $75,000.00 but a mansion might cost $30,000,000.00 or more. A Fiat 500’s MSRP is $14,995.00 but a Tesla Roadster starts at $101,500.00. (Internet search, January 2018) Websites are no different. It all depends on how basic or extreme you want to get and what the specific needs are for your website. If you are a DIY person you can build an effective website yourself for just a few hundred dollars, including the domain name and hosting, whereas hiring a professional web designer could cost as little as $1000 or as much as multiple thousands of dollars. While web design is not the primary focus of Studio902 Web Solutions, we will selectively take on web design projects if it develops being a good fit between our two companies. Without knowing what you need, or how fancy you need to get, Studio902 Web Solutions can build a nice-looking 5-page WordPress Website for as little as $1325.00 (not including the cost of your domain name and hosting package). What about companies who offer a free website?
There are companies online who advertise “free” websites but DON’T fall for that gimmick! The website may START OUT free, but it will end up being anything but free. Remorseful business owners (at least one of whom we helped rescue) often find that in the end their “free” website cannot be moved to another host, that they do not really own their domain name or that they don’t even own their own content that they created using the “free” tools! Trying to get control of your domain from these “free site builder” companies can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars and wind up costing you endless headaches and legal hassles. If you have ever heard the axiom “there’s no such thing as a free lunch” the questionable practices of the companies offering “free” (or very low cost) websites are the epitome of the phrase. Stay away from them! Work with a reputable company to build your web presence. Begin with Studio902 Web Solutions for your domain name, hosting and other infrastructure and we can take a look at building your website or provide referrals to other reputable designers.
How long does it take to build a website?
This question is also similar to the question about the cost of a house. Smaller websites with less customization require a shorter time span than do larger websites with many pages and lots of features, just as a two-bedroom bath and a half bungalow takes a lot less time to construct than a 15-bedroom mansion. Although Studio902 Web Solutions’ focus is on providing the infrastructure and services you need for your website (such as Domain Names, Hosting, SSL Certificates, Website Visibility, Business Class Email, Email Marketing and other products and services to help you establish and grow your web presence) we will selectively take on web design projects.
When we do, we can build a website as simple or complex as you need, but the average time to build a fully functional website is typically 90 to 120 days. If you have a requirement for a compressed timeline from inception to launch, our ability to execute that requirement will depend on how many other jobs we have on our plate at the time. We try to work with and please all customers, but occasionally an extreme demand comes along upon which we have to just take a pass. Give us a call or send us an email with the details of your project and if we come up with a fit between your requirements and our availability we’ll be pleased to welcome you to the group of satisfied Studio902 Web Solutions clients.
What platform do you build your websites on?
We used to build static websites using HTML5 and CSS3, but with the huge push towards “responsive” websites, the requirement by Google that all websites be “mobile friendly”, we have switched to using WordPress as our mail platform. Once your website is built, we can turn it over to you to maintain or maintain it for you for a modest recurring fee.
Where do the images come from for websites?
Many websites use stock images from various sources which, for a fee, will sell stock images that are royalty free. We can provide stock images for your website which match your theme, the kind of business you are running (or the products you sell) or we can refer you to a company where you can purchase them on your own. Many customers take their own photos or pay a professional photographer to take pictures of their business, their products, their personnel and anything else they need for the visual elements of your website.
How do I build my own website? I thought a professional web design company was required.
There are many creative, talented and even gifted people out there who do great work with photography, excellent work with writing and have an awesome business mind, but would never try to tackle building their own website. It may be because they know themselves and they know they would never get it done, or it may be that they are just too busy running their business and just don’t have the time. They probably should hire someone to do it for them. Then there are others who haven’t any of those skills and talents, but because they are eager to learn, willing to try new things and aren’t afraid to do a little research online to find out how to do things they don’t understand, take on the endeavor with gusto. Those are the two extremes. Most people fall somewhere in the middle. One thing’s for sure. If you don’t try, then failure is assured.

Why is email marketing necessary? Can't I just use Social Media to promote my website?
Email marketing, if done right, out-performs other marketing strategies, and returns (on average) $43 for every $1 spent. Getting the best return on the investment you make helps keep your marketing costs down and helps you grow your audience faster. There’s nothing wrong with creating an awareness of your company using Social Media, but why not multiply the effect of your Social Media presence by using Social Media as a funnel to your email marketing program? Creating a “best of both worlds” scenario, you could even use your email marketing channel to feed more visits to your Social Media campaigns as well. The two are NOT mutually exclusive, but rather, are complementary to one another!
What is an SSL Certificate and why do I need one?
With today’s society turning to online sources for nearly everything, and so many people dependent on and linked to so much online, security is becoming a greater and greater concern. Google has been the driving force behind making every website owner become concerned with security by downgrading websites’ ranking and placing warnings in the address bar of the Chrome web browser when sites are not secure. It’s not JUST an issue with sites receiving personal or financial data like usernames, passwords, bank account numbers or credit card numbers, it even affects sites which are just informational and do not transact any e-commerce. It’s about giving your website visitors a comfort level and building trust. Since SSL encryption involves authentication of the site and even the site owner, having that little green “lock” in your customers browser address bars could make all the difference whether they click away from your site or not. Studio902 Web Solutions offers several different levels of SSL Certificates to meet any need. Call our friendly phone associates at (480) 624-2500 today to find out which one is right for your website and place an order right then to get the security your website needs to stay competitive.
